GMP FInish Repair

I have a Roxie with Gunmetal Flake finish. (beautiful silver flake top/deep black sides and back with cream/ivory bindings. Unfortunately it has a serious chip out of the finish on the side/back margin (down to the wood) and a smaller one on the top. Anyone out there know the type of finish used on this guitar so that I can make a decent repair? emoticon

Aren't polyesther finishes usually very thin with a tendency to show surface imperfections (glue joints and the like) through the finish? Seems like something of that sort was the reason they fell out of favor.
